Summary
The Data Center Preconstruction Project Manager will oversee design and procurement efforts for data center expansions and building upgrades. This role requires deep experience in mission-critical environments, strong project management skills, and the ability to deliver proactive solutions to avoid project delays. The manager will lead preconstruction activities, collaborate with construction and operations teams, and ensure projects are executed with precision, quality, and efficiency. Responsibilities
Lead the development of Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and manage the competitive bidding process.
Evaluate proposals, identify scope gaps, and create accurate development budgets.
Oversee design development and construction documentation.
Manage procurement of Owner Furnished Contractor Installed (OFCI) equipment.
Prepare and distribute RFPs to contractors and equipment vendors.
Develop and maintain procurement schedules; follow up with bidders, validate proposals, conduct scope leveling, and provide recommendations for contract awards.
Coordinate closely with the construction team to manage equipment delivery and installation.
Ensure all project documentation and submittals meet specification standards.
Track and administer the equipment submittal process to ensure timely delivery within lead times.
Escalate issues to senior management when delays impact critical long-lead equipment submittals.
Coordinate shipment logistics with construction and operations teams.
Manage project accounting responsibilities, including budgets and cash flow projections.
Maintain effective communication with consultants, vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
Support integration of new equipment with IT and building systems (Wi-Fi, automation, monitoring, and security).
Recommend value engineering solutions during design and construction phases.
Conduct site walkthroughs, inspections, and quality control surveys (up to 40% travel required).
Ensure proper project closeout, including transfer of warranties, maintenance contracts, and documentation to operations teams.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience in data center construction management (advanced degrees or certifications are a plus).
PMP certification preferred.
Proficiency in MS Excel, Project, and PowerPoint required.
Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, and CAD tools preferred.
Strong knowledge of MEPS infrastructure systems and local efficiency codes.
Ability to support Operations with Method of Procedure (MOP) processes for critical activities.
Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, make sound decisions under pressure, and escalate issues appropriately.
